Plumber in Rockdale, TX

Rockdale nearly tripled in the 1950s after Alcoa built an aluminum smelter near the Sandow lignite mine, and much of its housing dates from that boom. Alta Vista Plumbing drives out US 79 from Georgetown, about 25 to 55 minutes. We repipe galvanized, replace cast-iron drains and fix heaters and sewer lines.

The boom and the pipe

1950s Alcoa-boom houses on Carrizo–Wilcox aquifer water

A railroad and lignite town that one plant remade almost overnight.

The town was born with the railroad. Lots went on sale in September 1873, International–Great Northern track arrived early in 1874, and the city incorporated in 1878. Lignite mines opened nearby in the 1890s and kept the area working for decades.

Then came aluminum. In the early 1950s Alcoa chose a site near the Sandow lignite mine, and the population jumped from about 2,300 in 1954 to 6,300 in 1958. Whole streets of houses went up in those years, plumbed the way builders worked then, with galvanized steel supply and cast-iron drains.

Smelting stopped in 2008 and the last of the plant closed in 2014, but the houses stayed. Seventy years on, galvanized pipe rusts shut from the inside, so pressure fades one fixture at a time. Cast-iron drains crack along the bottom, where water has run for decades, and the clay laterals outside let roots in at the joints.

The city pumps groundwater from Carrizo–Wilcox wells and treats it at plants on Mill Avenue and Texas Street. Under federal rules revised in October 2024, it inventoried more than 2,400 service connections for lead. Its water report advises longer flushing where a lead or galvanized service line needs replacing.

Local knowledge

US 79, FM 908 and the old smelter grounds

Roads, the city utility and the work that comes with mid-century houses.

US 79 is the main street and the road we take in from Taylor. FM 908 and FM 487 meet it in town, and Cameron, the county seat, lies 13 miles north. The city’s wells sit around town, including several near the airport, feeding about 51 miles of distribution main.

Former Alcoa buildings now house two large Bitcoin mining operations that reuse the transmission lines built for the smelters. The Sandow power plant that once supplied them closed in 2018. The 2020 census counted 5,323 residents, and much of the housing they live in dates from the smelter years.

Our calls here are the mid-century set. A galvanized line rusted down to a trickle at the kitchen sink. A cast-iron stack weeping inside a wall. A sewer lateral packed with post oak roots. A water heater sharing a closet with the original pipe.

Services

Repipes and drain work for mid-century Alcoa-era homes

The jobs that 1950s and 1960s houses in town ask for most.

Whole-House Repiping

Galvanized supply in 1950s houses here is at the end of its life. We repipe in PEX or copper, replace the main shut-off and pull the permit when the job needs one.

Sewer Backup & Sewer Line Repair

Cast-iron and clay laterals from the boom years crack and fill with roots. A camera run shows where, and we explain a spot repair against a full replacement before any digging starts.

Drain & Sewer Cleaning

Old cast-iron drains build scale on the inside that catches grease and paper. We clear kitchen and main lines, then tell you honestly whether cleaning will hold or the pipe is failing.

Water Heater Repair & Replacement

Heaters in older homes often sit in a hall closet with original galvanized connections. We replace the tank, swap corroded nipples and fittings, and add the drain pan and relief line the space needs.

Main Water Line Repair & Replacement

The service line from the meter to a 1950s house may be galvanized too, and the city water report flags those lines. We replace them with modern pipe and a new shut-off valve.

Water Leak Detection

Corroded steel tends to pinhole inside walls and under floors long before it fails outright. We trace hidden leaks with meter tests and listening gear so repairs stay small.

Burst & Frozen Pipe Repair

When a rusted galvanized nipple snaps at a fixture or heater, water runs fast. We stop it, replace the broken section and check the pipe on either side for the next weak spot.

I found myself doing a total remodel on a property recently purchased. Alta Vista went above and beyond to bring my property up to code and added value to the property through doing the following: added an extra bathroom, rerouted water lines, add an outside faucet, added utility connections, assured the water pressure from the meter to the house was accurate and educated us in the drainage system. All the new lines are insulated and Steve Maldonado kept us updated and educated during the entire process. During their service of my property there was one small leak that they promptly fixed as soon as I called them! To this day I have asked them questions pertaining to the plumbing on the property and they respond fast! I highly recommend Alta Vista Services for ALL plumbing jobs. There is no job too big or too small that they can't do!

Jared and Nigel were punctual, knowledgeable and answered all my questions. Everyone I spoke to from this company was delightful and helpful. We had a pipe break about a foot away from the clean out and they were able to come give me a quote same day and come out to do the work the next day. I highly recommend this company and would use them again.

FAQ

Galvanized and cast-iron questions from US 79 homeowners

Is it worth repairing galvanized pipe in a 1950s house?

No, not once it starts leaking or losing pressure in several places. Galvanized from the Alcoa-boom years corrodes from the inside, so a patch at one fixture tends to move the failure to the next joint. A repipe in PEX or copper ends that cycle of leaks. We look at the whole system and quote both options on site.

How do I find out what my water service line is made of?

Start with the city’s lead service line inventory. Rockdale gave each of its more than 2,400 connections an identifier, and residents can search the list by account and answer a survey on their pipe. If your side is listed as unknown, we can expose the line at the meter and the house and tell you what it is.

Why do my drains keep backing up after they are cleared?

Usually because the pipe itself is failing. Cast-iron drains from the 1950s scale up inside and crack along the bottom, and clay laterals let roots in at every joint. Cleaning restores flow for a while. A camera run shows whether the line needs a section replaced or the whole lateral renewed, and we show you the footage.
